16. Level Flight: A Poem

'Let's start with level flight,' first instructions

the incipient steps of a long journey

to go back and retrieve something lost

old musical notes fallen from scattered pages

with each breath, a reassembly and healing

clean slate, where to rebuild strong embouchure

like fresh fallen snow, molding it together

'Let's start with level flight,' breaking free

the first wing flaps, grasping updraft air

to get aloft, moving upward into sky

old horn lessons, you never really forget

with each note, an echo to follow

clean sounds, calling you homeward from afar

like the first song you made, again..

‘Let’s start with level flight,’ hearing whisper

the realization of what love really is

to come to a point and understand

old love seeds, now sprouting green inside

with nothing to gain, only giving away

clean freedom for anyone willing to fly

like that lonely seagull, forever soaring…
