6. Updrafts: A Poem

1.

The sky accepted him

allowing him to venture inward

with abandon and freedom and beauty

riding updrafts and swirling currents in vastness

between and through clouds at will

among shafts of light beaming between billows

extending his wings to catch the currents

and follow tidal forces unseen, strong and heavenly

2.

The ground beneath him

it could no longer hold him downward

because it had relented to his freedom and destiny

and the figure of the earth below came into focus

moving further away and losing detail and specificity

it became like a chain left dangling in a dungeon

the clinking sound of the iron against stone

becoming muffled in growing distance

and the earth beneath became mute

as he moved away from it

3.

The winds around him

were soon brimming with life

others were there in flight in wonder

and they explored together what this meant

free! and the sounds between them were stronger

and he realized it was music in the wind swirling

clouds were filled with song, supporting them

there was melody there, he recognized

because he played it all before

4.

The flashes of lightening

were parts of another song

that came in flashes and fragments

like tumbling shards of a mosaic cast into sky

every piece, every tile, flying and shifting

painting a portrait of the universe

a map of the one doorway

where anyone can enter into the updraft

and be accepted into the sky

in rumbling thunder and peals of lightening

the music that comes from within..
